It Begins

We were in a restaurant the other day when the waiters all came strutting past us to sing happy birthday to a neighboring table. Traditionally, we join in with the singing and clapping.

This time, however, C didn’t join in. I asked him why not.

His response: “No. Only children do that.”

I do believe those may be the saddest words I’ve ever heard – especially coming from my five year old.

I poked him in the belly, said “I’m not a child” and joined in with his brother and momma – who was also singing with a rather desperate enthusiasm.
